The Pace Of Change Speedgolf Podcast: Broadcasting The Evolution of Speedgolf In The 21st Century

After attending the Speedgolf World Championships in 2015, Scott Dawley (@scottdawleygolf) and Dude Spellings (@dudespellings) decided it was time to start a podcast. The game of golf was already in the beginning stages of major transformation, and we wanted to document the revolutionary change as it was happening...in real time! In 2015-16 there just wasn't enough Speedgolf action to cover on a weekly podcast. So we spoke with forward thinking guests from around the world of golf about where they saw the game headed. Then, in 2017-18 we witnessed such a dramatic explosion in Speedgolf activity that most of our coverage began to revolve around developments in our sport. As we surpass our 100th episode, I'm proud of what we have been able to share with our listeners and fans. Our content is truly unique in the world of golf. The entire POC library of past episodes is available at PaceOfChange.com, and will always be free to download and enjoy. Starting in 2019, the POC will exclusively focus on the developing sport of Speedgolf! We will profile and interview the pioneers, innovators, entrepreneurs, athletes, and record breakers – the change agents in and around the game of Speedgolf. With the help of our guests, the POC will shed light on the ways in which Speedgolf is growing and evolving to keep pace with the demands of the modern world: Faster. Cheaper, More Fun! We invite you, the listener, to join us on this incredible journey the game of Speedgolf is on. Subscribe on your favorite podcast platform like Spotify or iTunes today and get notified when we release a new episode. Until then, pick up the pace, play from your heart. -Scott Dawley-

Today we welcome back our first returning guest to the podcast. Episode 009 guest, and now 2-time Olympic Medalist, Nick Willis is back with us on the POC.

Nick had just returned stateside after the long trek from New Zealand back to Michigan, so we appreciate him taking the time to recap last weekend's tournament.

Beyond the event, we ask Nick his opinion on why NZ Golf has been so successful at growing participation in Speedgolf, and discuss other ways we can get more people involved in the sport.

We also ask Nick about a new training program he has launched with his wife Sierra since returning from Rio. It's called MilerMethod.com. It's a one month training program to help you run your fastest mile ever. New sesssions starting soon. Check it out at MilerMethod.com

“Andy was a world beater during his junior and college golf days,” Walker told PGATour.com. “(Lucas) Glover, (Charles) Warren and (Jonathan) Byrd, all these guys playing on Tour, were the names I heard growing up, and Andy Sanders was right up there with them.”

Really special guest on today. I played college golf with Andy at University of Houston. We were roommates actually. He introduced me to my wife back in 2000. He was a groomsmen at our wedding in 2003. Andy was also the #1 player on our team, and was blazing a path to the PGA Tour, when a series crazy events forever changed his life.

We see each other once a year now, each time he and Jimmy Walker roll through town for the Shell Houston Open. This year, if they play the SHO, they will do it with Jimmy as reigning PGA champion, which is also how they will enter the next week at Augusta for the first major since Baltusrol back in late July: The Masters.

Topics Include:

-Andy's Story -> http://bit.ly/2ko6V8v & http://bit.ly/2knXWEr

- Butch Harmon & yearly goals for his stable of Tour players

- The Masters

- Tiger Woods

- PGA Championship

- PGA Tour Shot Tracker

- The double edged sword of statistics

- The importance of a good team

- Winning the '16 PGA Championship

- Playing Speedgolf at Tiger's event in the Bahamas

Matt Tausig has been getting a lot of attention from the golf media in the last few weeks. He’s a seasoned pga professional, and the DOG at a resort in Missouri. What his courses have begun offering is being described as diabolical and devious, if not genius, by national golf publications.

So, what’s the deal with pay by the hour rates? I’m glad I reached out to Matt, and I think he is too. This is his chance to tell the whole story behind time-based green fees, a story that can’t be fully told or understood in a 300 word article. So, let’s get right into it.

2016 was another great year for the sport of Speedgolf. To cap off the season properly, and to get players and fans motivated for the year ahead, the POC has just released the second edition of The Speedgolf Power Rankings.

In this episode the POC team discusses the updated rankings, player-by-player. Full details at paceofchange.com.

Congratulations to all players on the list. The next rankings update is slated to occur on 04.15.17, shortly after the New Zealand and Australia championships and a US event in hosted by Sean King in California.

Welcome back to the POC! As usual, we are broadcasting the evolution of Golf in the 21st century. In order to accomplish our mission, we profile and interview the pioneers, entrepreneurs, innovators, yes the game changers in and around the golf industry.

We've talked about FootGolf with the founders of the AFGL, interviewed the creator of FlingGolf, and covered the Speedgolf World Championships. Entrepreneurs, tech innovators, human performance experts, and world class athletes have been on the show. To sum it up, we turn on the mic and let the future of Golf come out.

When you really get down to it, how and when the game practically evolves hinges one very important group of gatekeepers. It's their collective worldview and mindset that ultimately determines the world's view and mindset of what can happen when you spend time (and money) at a golf facility. Our guest today once surveyed 500 golfers, asking them to provide one word descriptions of Golf. One person out of five hundred, 1/500, wrote FUN.

Hopefully the POC has revealed there is no shortage of new and exciting alternatives, or cutting edge technologies, or game changing products and services tailored to meet the demands of the busy, modern day lifestyle. The possibilities are endless!

But in the end, the buck stops with the golf course owners and operators. They are the real industry 'sharks' that decides to adopt or dismiss, to invite or decline. They are in control of the pace of change!

Recently I've been getting more and more messages, emails, and phone calls from golf course operators ready to begin offering strategic blocks of time on the tee sheet to attract 'faster' golfers. Josh Heptig, manager of 3 golf courses in San Luis Obispo, CA, contacted the POC after hearing about Speedgolf USA on Babbittville radio.

Side note - I fondly remember a time (ha ha - like a year ago) when I would call a golf course and have to explain that playing fast has actually become 'a thing', a real sport called Speedgolf. To be fair, every GM and golf professional I've talked to has responded with openness and curiosity, even if Speedgolf wasn't a feasible option because of capacity issues, pricing, prohibitive terrain, or some other reasonable restraint. Not one has rejected it outright.

This podcast is a little different than others. I decided to record my return phone call with Josh, with his permission of course, and give listeners the chance to hear an unscripted conversation with a forward thinking course operator. The audio quality is diminished, but I'm hoping the quality of our organic conversation more than makes up for it.

Josh and I have a request for you. If you liked what you heard, share this episode with the operators of the golf courses where you play. Thank you in advance, and here's to faster golf in 2017!

We’ve got a great podcast with Jaime coming up in just a second, but first..

We are inviting you to the 2016 The Pace Of Play Challenge! It’s scheduled for 12/31,, New Year’s Eve day at the Wolfdancer course at Hyatt Lost Pines, near Austin, Tx.

The Pace of Play Challenge will introduce players to the much needed, and desired option of choosing from a number of TIMED FORMATS, in addition to the standard un-timed outing. More information and registration at SpeedgolfTexas.com

Oct 22, 2016

What’s up golfers? Welcome back to the Pace Of Change Golf Podcast, I’m your co-host Scott Dawley, and along with Dude Spellings, we are broadcasting the evolution of golf in the 21st century.

What does that mean? Each week we profile and interview the leading innovative minds in and around the world of golf. Pioneers in the alt golf space, tech entrepreneurs, industry association insiders, human performance experts, to sum it up...we turn the mic on and let the future of golf come out!!

October is Speedgolf Month on the POC, and Speedgolfers, we have a new World Champion. That’s right, at the top of the field 2-time winner, defending champion, and world #1 Rob Hogan finished in 4th, less than 1 stroke behind 3rd place Mack McLain and 2nd place Wes Cupp. But in the end nobody could not catch up to #8 ranked Jaime Young, who      himself into the round 1 lead with a record tying 72, even par performance. In the final round Jaime kept a clean speedgolf scorecard, no high numbers, just 5 bogeys, and the rest pars to capture his second win, and at the age of 52, his first World Championship!

After the event, I caught up with Dude Spellings and Allan Phillips, who finished 6th this year, to recap world championship week while the experience was fresh for them. There are some great insights here, so let’s get to it.

IMPORTANT*****

First, there are a few important announcements we want to get out there into the world. For those of you following the Speedgolf Power Rankings, Jaime Young can’t go into 2017 as the #8 ranked Speedgolfer, right? So we are preparing to initiate another round of voting to take the results from this week’s world championship into account. Be on the lookout for more about the Speedgolf Power Rankings brought to you by The Pace Of Change Golf Podcast very soon.

Dude and I are excited to announce Speedgolf Texas will be hosting one last final Speedgolf event of 2016. It’s called the Pace of Play Challenge, and it’s happening on 12/31, that’s right New Year’s Eve day at the Wolfdancer course at Hyatt Lost Pines, near Austin, Tx. As far as we know, it’s the only golf event in the country specifically designed around the issue of pace of play.  We want to show the golf world that it doesn't have to take 4 or 5 hours to play, and that it’s actually more fun when you pick up the pace. Wolfdancer is a top-rated resort course in the Texas Hill Country, and will be a good challenge for golfers and Speedgolfers alike.

There will be a Speedgolf Division, with a pro purse if we can get 5 pros to commit to the event. So let us know right away if you’re interested in competing.

And then we send of teams of two in what we are calling Pace Of Play Flights. Golfers will be able to choose between a 2 hour or 3 hour flight, and will be penalized one stroke for every minute over the maximum flight time.

Finally, we will be continuing the annual Last Chance Open, a non-timed 2 person team event with gross and net flights.

We’ve opened registration at SpeedgolfTexas.com. You can find out everything you need to know about the event, and if you have more questions, please reach out to us.

Speaking of events, did you know the annual New Zealand and Australia Speedgolf Championships are scheduled for March 4-5 in Rotorua, New Zealand, and the following weekend in Melbourne Australia. Speedgolf USA is putting a player package together and will be sending a Speedgolf team. I’m going, and I want you to come!

We will be working with both speedgolf associations down under to create an unforgettable trip, with plenty of speedgolf, golf, outdoor running, sightseeing, and more. If you’re interested please sign up at USASpeedgolf.com so we can send you more information.

NZ Speedgolf Open Online Registration: http://www.golf.co.nz/Tournaments/DashBoard.aspx?CompetitionID=497136

We’ve also got a Speedgolf USA event schedule coming out very soon. Expect to see between 5 and 8 events in the US in 2017! Speedgolf, y’all, it’s happening!

All this information and relevant links can be found in the show notes of this episode, either on our website, paceofchange.com, or on itunes, stitcher, player fm, or youtube.

We have some amazing sponsors you can find out more about on our sponsor and affiliate page at paceofchange.com. Check it out for exclusive discounts on the latest greatest game changing products and services for the 21st century golfer.

All right, exciting times! Let’s catch up for a world championship recap with Dude Spellings and Allan Phillips.

Today, it’s all about Speedgolf. In fact, October is Speedgolf Month at The Pace Of Change. We’re covering the top contenders for the title of World Champion next week in Chicago, IL for the 5th annual Speedgolf World Championshiops.

More and more people are asking, "Who are the top-ranked Speedgolfers in the world?" Until now, the answer has pretty much been..."umm, Rob Hogan!"

So, The Pace Of Change Golf Podcast recently sponsored a voter-driven, player-supported, data-backed ranking to answer that question. The results are in!!

And as of right now, the results are published on our website at www.paceofchange.com.

What we’re going to do in this episode is explain the circumstances that led to the rankings even coming about, what the purposes are for the rankings, how they were derived, and the potential of the rankings as the sport continues to grow globally.

Then, tomorrow we will be releasing Ep 038, which will be Dude, myself, and Allan Phillips breaking down the rankings for you player by player, and giving you our insights into how each player is trending, and how they might perform if they bring their A game next week.

Sep 28, 2016

Did you know October is Speedgolf Month? Well it is here at The POC, and we want you to celebrate it with us! Our sport’s most anticipated event, The Speedgolf World Championships, is taking place October 17th-18th, so from now until the end of October we are going to bring you into the world of Speedgolf.

We’re going to interview some of the top ranked professionals in the game, and we’re going to release the inaugural Speedgolf Power Rankings, which is a voter supported ranking, it’s not a data computational based ranking like the Official World Golf Rankings on October 10th, and release a podcast on October 11th to discuss the rankings and make some predictions about the outcome of the world championship.

Alright, to kick it off right, today we’ve got Paras Shah, the new director of Speedgolf Austin, working alongside Dude Spellings there in ATX. Paras played his first round of Speedgolf a few months ago. Like so many others before him, it clicked. The dots lined up. Speedgolf made perfect sense.

Over the summer, Paras and Dude started a weekly morning Speedgolf workout, and it's been attracting runners, golfers, and many young Austin entrepreneurs looking for new, creative and challenging ways to stay fit outdoors with friends, and still get to work on time.

Then, he registered for the 2016 Speedgolf World Championship, and got invited as a first time participant. With blazing fast speed, Paras could be a factor at the top of the leaderboard.

Topics Include

Benefits of Speedgolf

Developing your own Speedgolf strategy

Training preparations for the World Championship

Kevin Na plays Speedgolf at the Tour Championship
